Independence is all about developing control of each of your individual limbs… independently! So for example, getting your hands to do one thing while your feet are doing something else. This is an essential part of learning to play the drums and in the exercises below we start to look at some beginner level independence exercises to help you develop this control. It’s essential that you can play ALL of these basic independence exercises before you move on to Grade 1 level material. Start each exercise slowly and repeat until you can play them confidently – practice to a metronome, your final target speed at beginner level is 100 bpm.
